Chuck Vincent’s Warrior Queen (1987) is a quintessential "B-movie" sword-and-sandal epic that attempts to blend historical drama with the "exploitation" elements Vincent was known for. Set in the decadent Roman city of Pompeii in 79 A.D., the story follows two parallel tracks that collide during the city's final hours. Berenice (Sybil Danning) is a poised Roman ambassador and the mistress of Caesar. However, she lives a secret double life: she is an underground liberator who uses her elite status to help slaves escape from the city’s brutal brothels and households. While Berenice orchestrates her secret mission, a gladiator hero named Marcus (Rick Hill) falls in love with a newly captured virgin slave girl named Vespa (Tally Chanel). Their romance serves as the emotional core of the film's "oppression" theme. Just as mistress Berenice prepares for her most daring slave rescue, Mount Vesuvius begins to erupt. The climax is a chaotic race against time where the "Warrior Queen" and the slaves must outrun both the advancing lava and the Roman soldiers who are still pursuing them. Director Chuck Vincent was a veteran of the adult film industry (known for his high production values), Vincent tried to "go mainstream" in the 80s with titles like this one and Young Nurses in Love. Producer Harry Alan Towers was a legendary B-movie impresario who frequently used the pseudonym "Peter Welbeck" for his scripts. There are several sexually explicit scenes throughout the movie, but Sybil remains relatively covered up. Donald Pleasence (Clodius Flaucus) plays the decadent, corrupt mayor/ruler of Pompeii. Pleasence is the highlight, bringing a theatrical (and often hilarious) energy to lines like, "I'd like to see the cow!" when told of a goat born with a human head. Rick Hill (Marcus) is fresh off the success of Deathstalker (1983). Samantha Fox (credited as Stasia Micula) is the famous British pop star and Page 3 girl and she appears in a secondary role as Philomena.
