This parody of the six o’clock news is a series of sexually-oriented or inappropriate humor newscasting skits. The film's tagline is "Banned From All Networks". The movie draws parallels to "The Groove Tube" which came out about a decade before and was one of the inventors of sketch comedy skits adopted by Saturday Night Live and other parody films that followed. Another good example is "Kentucky Fried Movie". Romano Vanderbes not only directed but also co-wrote the film. The principal cast featured Doug Ballard as Bill McFarland and Lydia Mahan as Maggie Nel, who served as the central news anchors for the fictional KSEX broadcast. A notable member of the cast is Wayne Knight, who played Bill Wright. Knight later achieved stardom for roles in "Seinfeld" and "Jurassic Park". Adding another layer of comedic familiarity was the involvement of Don Pardo as the Announcer. Pardo was well-known for his voiceover work on "Saturday Night Live".
Behind the camera was Oliver Wood who established a successful career working on major Hollywood productions such as "Die Hard 2," "Face/Off," and the "Bourne" series. The comedy here hinges on the unexpected and often crude integration of sexual themes into the typically formal and serious context of a news broadcast. The film makes fun of the news industry and ads of the decade but in a risqué way.
The movie was "R" rating, and contains nudity, sexual content, and strong language. There are two hardcore actresses in the movie that play the boxers in the NOW skit. Both were very well known in their time. Veronica Hart was born in Las Vegas in 1956. She has had a long career as an actress, director, and producer. She also did quite a bit of mainstream cinema and even television. In adult films, she was usually cast as the stylish attractive uppity wealthy woman. She received awards for her roles in Amanda by Night (1981), Roommates (1982) and Foxtrot (1982). She directed and produced Misty Beethoven: The Musical (2004), a remake of a very well known adult film from the 1970s and she is a member of the AVN (Adult Video News) hall of fame. She played a judge in Boogie Nights (1997) and a role in Magnolia (1999). There are many interviews of her out there.
