Released in 1971, under the original German title "Die Sex-Abenteuer der drei Musketiere", also known by "The Three Musketeers and Their Sexual Adventures", the film represents Sexploitation filmmaking from Germany and Switzerland. The movie sexploits Alexandre Dumas's universally recognized tale of swashbuckling heroism and camaraderie. Central to the film's identity is Erwin C. Dietrich, a prolific Swiss and German exploitation cinema producer known for putting together films cheap and fast. Dietrich originally wrote, directed and produced the film under pseudonyms. The film is an Erotic Sex Comedy. It was almost immediately dubbed and released in the US for drive-in play with its safe R rating.

The film should be titled "D’Artagnan discovers he's a man". The plot follows young D'Artagnan as his sexual desires are awakened. D'Artagnan (played by Peter Kent), is presented as a tender young nobleman that uses his "eh hem" to slingshot acorns. He loses his virginity to a traveling gypsy (Carmen the witch) and then begins having sexual relations with several of the young maidens on the estate, the most notable of which is Yvonne played by Ingrid Steeger. Yvonne really fancies D’Artagnan.

Concerned by his son's precocious activities, D'Artagnan's father (very well cast and played by Rico Peter) dispatches him to Paris to join the Royal Musketeers. The journey becomes a series of sexual detours. D'Artagnan encounters numerous eager beautiful women and at the end, he rekindles his passion with the gypsy woman.

The famed Musketeers, Athos (Thomas Larisch), Porthos (Jürg Coray), and Aramis (Achim Hammer) are really irrelevant side-plots except for one scene where they kill a Count whose countess wife is the nymphomanic that fancies D’Artagnan, although the reason why they kill him is not clear.

The movie is a tame R and might even pass as PG-13 with some slight edits. There are strange and pointless stories told by the musketeers. A significant role is played by Ingrid Steeger as the servant Yvonne. Steeger was a recognizable face in German entertainment. Steeger recently passed away in December of 2023 She was in several softcore films and successfully transitioned to comedy as Gaby Klimbim in the iconic 1970s ARD sketch show "Klimbim" (1973-1979), a well known German comedy series where she played the often scantily clad, goofy daughter Gaby and was dubbed "Ulknudel" (comedy goofball) beloved by the nation. She received multiple Bravo Otto awards (Gold 1978) and later a special German Comedy Award (2003). If you are an Ingrid Steeger fan, there are nude scenes of her. She was always been very proud of her sexploitation past.

The production was dominated by Erwin C. Dietrich, whose multiple roles shaped the film's creation. Dietrich wrote the screenplay, directed the film, and produced the film, all under a pseudonym. Peter Kent, who played D'Artagnan also composed the film's score under a pseudonym. The film was a co-production between West Germany and Switzerland, allowing producers to pool financial resources, potentially access subsidies in different territories, utilize specific scenic locations, and target broader distribution markets. The film's original language is German and dubbed in english. Exterior scenes are of Swiss castles, specifically Hilfikon Castle in Villmergen, Kanton Aargau, and Schloss Hallwil, also in Kanton Aargau. Interior scenes were filmed at the Urania Film Ateliers in Berlin, Germany.

A US theatrical release was made on June 6th, 1971. The reported runtime was first reported to be 81 minutes, but the dubbed version I worked off was 77 minutes with no end titles. Color 35mm film was used with mono sound at an aspect ratio of 1.85 : 1 - for you film buffs. The film is a very tame sexploitation movie. The movie has less nudity and sexual situations than the 1968 Movie Candy with Richard Burton Marlon Brando and Walter Matheau - certainly far less than Jane Fonda’s 1968 movie Barbarella but is noteworthy for it's German sexy charm.

Sexploitation films parodying famous historical stories like Casanova, Pinocchio, Romeo & Juliet, and the Grimm Brothers offered low budget movies instant audience recognition, a pre-packaged narrative framework, quasi art legitimacy, and a chance to infuse some comedy. Despite its flaws, the film has persisted as a cult classic.
