An excellent example of the "sexploitation" genre that flourished in the early 1970s. Produced by the legendary David F. Friedman, often called the "Sultan of Sleaze". It was common practice for sexploitation movies to use familiar mainstream tales. Here, Friedman re-interpreted the classic swashbuckling trope of Johnston McCulley’s hero with the ribald humor and adult content typical of the era's independent cinema.

The film follows the traditional Zorro origin story with a campy, erotic twist. Don Diego de Vega (played by Douglas Frey) is summoned by his father to return from Spain as Los Angeles has been taken over by the corrupt Luis Bonasario and the lecherous Sergeant Felipio Latio (played by Bob Cresse).  To hide his identity, Diego adopts an outrageously "effeminate" persona—complete with pink attire, a parasol, and a white donkey—which leads the villains to underestimate him. By night, he becomes Zorro, who is as interested in "servicing" the local senoritas as he is in delivering justice. The unsanitized version features several sex scenes.  The script is heavy on puns and double entendres, often involving Zorro’s "sword" or his penchant for carving the letter "Z" into the derrières of his enemies.

In 1974, it became one of the first films banned by the Queensland Films Board of Review after it was discovered that uncut "X" prints were being screened under an "R" rating. In some markets, the film was released as The Sexcapades of Don Diego. the film remains a cult favorite for fans of 1970s exploitation. It represents a specific moment in cinema when the collapse of the Hays Code allowed independent producers to take mainstream characters—like Zorro or Sherlock Holmes—and place them in overtly sexualized parodies.

Maria, Zorro’s love interest is played by Robyn Whitting (Jackie Giroux). Helena is played by Penny Boran. Margarita is played by Michelle Simon (Starylyn Simon). Rosita is played by Lynn Harris (Terry Johnson). Graciola is played by Becky Perlman (Rebecca Perlman). Finally, Esmeralda is played by Kathy Hilton (Kathy Avanzino). Notably, the film is often cited as the screen debut of Kathy Hilton (mother of Paris and Nicky Hilton), who appeared under her maiden name, Kathy Avanzino.
