Southern Comforts 1971 stars Monica Gayle Wendy Winders Judy Angel Debbie Osborne hicksploitation sexploitation produced and directed by Harry Novak Buck Buckalew.
Danny, played by Jacob Often, is a wimpy con-man that convinces young or married ladies to travel with him across back road Hicksville where they hold scam beauty contests. Carol, played by Monica Gayle, one of the girls traveling with Danny, ran away from her husband a couple states back. Another lady, Brenda played by Judy Angel, is more mature but is clearly very sexually active. The third traveling girl, Julie played by Wendy Winders, is a virgin. Their convertible overheats then breaks down and the girls push the car to the Melanie estates, a run down former plantation run by Colonel Jefferson Melanie played by Jack Richesin.
The Colonel is a suave and witty fella that uses 20 dollar words to convey 50 cent thoughts. He offers his hospitality and then learns that Danny does beauty contests and his dirty old man side comes out. Danny then takes the Colonel’s truck and drives around the countryside recruiting more ladies for the beauty contest. One girl, Prissy played by Debbie Osborne, is sick of her father working her to death, and she runs away with Danny. There are lots of explicit scenes of all kind and about 75 minutes of the 100 minute movie is dedicated to innocent frolicking.
Eventually there is a beauty contest in the barn but before a winner is declared, the local sheriff shows up with two men. One is Carol’s husband and the other is Prissy’s father. The Colonel is friendly with the sheriff and pulls him aside and convinces the sheriff to look the other way … because the County whorehouse run by the sheriff and the Colonel could use a guy like Danny to recruit girls and run the joint. The movie ends with the Sheriff shoo-ing off the disgruntled father and husband.
This is another stereotypical Buckalew movie about "dumb hicks, dumb chicks, not-so-well-thought-out humor, shine-drinkin, skinny-dippin', barnyard orgies, and other backwoods tomfoolery". The narrative is a bunch of loosely connected scenes. It is an enjoyably lowbrow early 70's Southern-fried soft-core smut film shot in California. The film's tagline was "They felt the spirit of the hills in her jugs!".
