Director Javier Aguirre’s Fantaterror Masterpiece represents a unique divergence from Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The original title was El gran amor del conde Drácula (released internationally as Count Dracula’s Great Love and Cemetery Girls and dubbed in english). The costumes, locations, film quality and actors are top notch thanks to producer Francisco Lara Polop. Dracula is played by Paul Naschy. He was most famous for his character Waldemar Daninsky, the werewolf but he played many such characters.
The story brings the old I have a flat tire, can I use your phone excuse for our travelers to cross paths with the Count (Dr. Wendell Marlow). Imre Polvi (Victor Alcázar/Vic Winner) and four beautiful young women: Karen (Haydée Politoff), Senta (Rosanna Yanni), Marlene (Ingrid Garbo), and Elke (Mirta Miller) do a wonderful job of telling the story.
The Count has suffered a past defeat at the hands of Van Helsing, leaving him without his full powers. Each girl is unique: one is promiscuous, one adventurous, one fearful, and Karen is the "sweet young virgin". Imre is turned into a vampire and killed by a fall on a sharp object. The other three, Senta and Marlene (left in the daylight and burned by the Count) and Elke (stake through the heart for trying to turn Karen) vanquish. Unfortunately for the Count, he falls in love with Karen, and because the selfish little brat doesn’t want to become his queen, the Count kills himself.
Haydée Politoff was a retired Russian-French actress who began her career as a muse for Éric Rohmer. She gained international fame in La Collectionneuse (1966). She married a British rock star and moved to the United States (San Francisco/Big Sur area), where she retired from acting in the late 1970s. Rosanna Yanni was one of Spain's most prominent genre actresses. She began her career as a chorus girl, then a fashion model, and starred in over 40 films between 1963 and 1980. Mirta Miller is also a prolific actress who has appeared in more than 65 films. She became a staple of horror and erotic comedies. Miller is noted for her longevity in the industry and her ability to navigate the transition from the "destape" (nudity) era to more serious drama. Ingrid Garbo was a Spanish genre actress active during the 1970s, whose stage name was a clear homage (or marketing ploy) related to Greta Garbo. She appeared in several horror and mystery films.
The film was internationally released and premiered in April 1973 at the Paris Festival of Fantastic Films. There are clothed and unclothed versions of the film, but this is not a true sexploitation or soft core movie.
For many American fans, their first exposure to the film was through Elvira's Movie Macabre. The version she screened was the dark, murky television broadcast not this 4K unclothed version. The film's box office intake of approximately $1,200,000 suggests it was moderately successful.
