Released in 1971, Below the Belt (aka The Champion) is a gritty independent dramatic exploitation film directed by Bethel Buckalew and produced by Harry H. Novak. It follows the well known 1970s trope of sports mixed with seedy underworld dealings prior to legalization of gambling in the US. The story centers on Johnny, a talented but somewhat slow-witted naive boxer managed by Sammy. His promoter, Louie, is deeply involved in shady deals with the local mafia. To ensure Johnny remains distracted and under control, Louie uses one of his seductive prostitutes Lisa to keep him occupied.  Johnny’s trainer Benny is the comic relief and voice of reality. The peak of irony is when Sammy is punched to death because he could not keep his hands off the prostitute Lisa.
